Slugging: The Skincare Trend and What It's Really About

New trends regularly emerge in the world of skincare. One that has been getting a lot of attention lately is "slugging." But what exactly does this term mean, and is it worth trying? Here's everything you need to know and how Nø Cosmetics products might fit in well.

Slugging: der Hautpflege-Trend und was wirklich dahinter steckt

What is Slugging?

Day creams are typically formulated to nourish the skin, moisturize it, and prepare it for the day. Sunscreen, on the other hand, is meant to act like a shield – it sits on the skin and protects against UV-induced skin damage. If you apply sunscreen first and then day cream, this protective film can be disturbed.

Why does slugging work, and for whom is it suitable?

Benefits of the Skincare Trend

  • Moisture & Hydration: The main benefit is that slugging locks moisture into the skin and prevents it from drying out, which is particularly helpful in dry conditions, with heating air, or in winter.
  • Protection of the Skin Barrier: The occlusive layer protects the skin from external influences and prevents water from escaping, allowing the skin to regenerate overnight.
  • Optimisation of Previous Care: If you have previously used serum or moisturiser, slugging "seals" their effect and can enhance their efficacy.
  • Soft, Smooth, Plump Skin in the Morning: Many report significantly softer skin and a radiant, healthy-looking complexion after use.

Slugging Routine Step-by-Step – how to slug

If you want to try slugging, here's how it generally works:

  1. Remove makeup and thoroughly cleanse your face.
  2. Apply your regular skincare, e.g., liquid, serum, then moisturizer, as usual.
  3. As the final step: Apply a thin layer of an occlusive cream or ointment. Not too much, a thin layer is sufficient.
  4. Leave on overnight and wash off in the morning.

Slugging is particularly suitable during the winter months or whenever your skin feels dry or tight; 1–3 times a week is often enough.

Tip: If you have sensitive skin or skin prone to blemishes, consider "slugging" only specific areas (e.g., cheeks, lips, eye area) instead of "sealing" everything. This technique is also known as "spot slugging."

Natural Occlusion Without Petrolatum: Options at Nø Cosmetics

Nø Cosmetics does not offer traditional petrolatum- or mineral oil-based occlusive creams in its product range, as we deliberately avoid mineral oils, paraffins, and similar ingredients. Nevertheless, our richer formulations – especially the All-In Barrier Cream and the Intensive Repair Cream – can provide a mild form of occlusion through re-fattening components such as plant-based oils and butters, as well as barrier-strengthening active ingredients. They do not trap moisture as strongly as pure petrolatum products but support the skin barrier and reduce transepidermal water loss in a gentler, "conscious beauty"-compliant way.

Beauty Trend Slugging: So Simple, So Effective

The Slugging trend is not an elaborate ritual, and that's precisely what makes it so attractive: With minimal effort, it can provide your skin with intense moisture and protection, especially during dry, stressed periods. Particularly for people with dry, sensitive, or stressed skin, Slugging can help lock in moisture overnight, strengthen the skin barrier, and wake up to a soft, plump skin feeling.
