K.R.A.K.E. – Mission in Words
Cologne has a huge litter problem: one ton of trash floats into the North Sea via the Rhine every day. That's 365 tons a year! The trash enters the river in many ways, often due to infrastructure. The river promenade is built with a slope so that rainwater can drain away. Unfortunately, trash also drains away – directly from the riverbank into the Rhine.
KRAKE e.V., the Cologne Rhine Cleanup Commando Unit, has declared war on this flood of trash and organizes public litter collection campaigns several times a month on the Rhine banks, in parks, and in forests. Since 2022, Germany's first and so far only litter trap, the "Rheinkrake" (Rhine Kraken), has also been in operation, passively catching trash from the river 24 hours a day. In addition, the association salvages e-scooters from the water, gives lectures at schools, and offers guided tours through the "Müllseum" (Trash Museum).
